TOOLS + MATERIALS:
Check out the supply list on Amazon. Items are also linked individually below:
- 2 foldover crimps
- 2 jump rings 4mm or 6mm
- clasp and chain
- round cord (2-3mm) leather or rubber
- basic tools: chain nose pliers*, round nose pliers, and (OPTIONAL: flush cutters)
- E600 adhesive (OPTIONAL)
*I recommend using 2 pairs of chain nose pliers for opening and closing jump rings
If you prefer a smaller quantity, the crimps, clasp, jump rings are available as a KIT (5 sets, gold or silver, with or without chain) in my Etsy shop (US ONLY). I have a few different colors of 2mm round leather cord in my shop as well.
The folding crimps I’m using are intended for flat cord that is 3-4mm wide, but I’m going to show you an easy way to adapt them so you can use them on round cord as small as 2mm, which is what I’m using today (metallic bronze color).
INSTRUCTIONS:
First you’ll want to flatten the flaps out by squeezing gently right inside each corner using chain nose or flat nose pliers, so you have something that looks like this.
Next you’ll want to use some round nose pliers and grab the crimp right on the edge, and roll it in towards the center.
Do the same on the other side.
Use the chain nose pliers to squeeze gently to adjust the size, and make sure you have one side overlapping the other side. That’s going to help you get the perfect fit.
It should be just a tiny bit bigger than the cord.
Optionally, you can add a dab of E6000 adhesive inside the crimp, then place the end of the cord into the crimp and continue to squeeze around the crimp until the fit is just right. Then give it a final squeeze or two to clamp it down in place.
If there is any cord sticking out you can use a pair of flush cutters to snip that off, then you can attach the clasp and chain using jump rings.
That’s all there is to it, folks! Let me know if you have any questions.
Check out these videos if you want to see how to use these crimps on flat cord or if you need a close up demo of how to use jump rings correctly.
Thanks so much for watching, I’ll see you next time!
